Application Note: Custom Engineered Gas Detectors for Major Pharmaceutical Company
Cross Helps Major Pharmaceutical Company Reduce Risk with Custom Engineered Gas Detectors
When a pharmaceutical manufacturer decided to take a closer look at their safety procedures, they reached out to Cross Process Solutions for help. Their most specialized need was in their solvent recovery room where they were using both acetone and isopropyl alcohol. These volatile chemicals are often difficult for gas detectors to recognize. To make matters more complex the area was Class 1 Division 1 because of the highly flammable nature of the chemicals.
There was not an off-the-shelf option that would work for this area, so our team worked directly with Draeger engineering to develop a custom solution. What they developed was a unique system with three separate intrinsically safe infrared flammable gas detectors with strobe lights and an audible alert to signal operators when dangerous levels of gas were in the area.

The Cross team also commissioned the gas detectors to ensure they were installed and working properly. In this case, our team programmed their detectors to communicate with the facility automation systems. Because they used two systems for redundancy, we conducted loop checks to ensure both systems were receiving information from the detectors. In addition, our team calibrated the detectors with NIST traceable gas and provided the customer with all details of equipment used along with a certificate of calibration so that the customer can feel confident in their detectors and know that they are working properly.
If you would like to reduce your facility’s risk contact Cross today to learn more about gas detectors from Draeger. Our team has years of experience and is ready to help you engineer, commission, calibrate, and train your team on a solution for your unique life safety application.
