Metrology Glossary: Torque Screwdriver

What Is A Torque Screwdriver?

A torque screwdriver is a tool designed to enable users to exert a specific and controlled level of rotational force, or torque, when tightening screws. The precision in torque application is crucial to prevent potential harm to the screw or its surrounding material due to excessive force or the risk of the screw gradually coming loose due to insufficient tightening. Torque screwdrivers use a clutch mechanism, which serves to limit the maximum torque that can be applied to the screw. This clutch mechanism is typically adjustable, allowing users to configure it to their desired torque setting. Once the preset torque value is reached, the clutch disengages, preventing further torque from being applied.

What Are Torque Screwdrivers Used For?

Torque screwdrivers find applications in various fields. They are essential for assembling delicate components, such as electronic parts and medical devices, where over-tightening could lead to damage. In preventive maintenance, torque screwdrivers ensure screws are tightened to specifications, reducing the risk of loosening over time. In manufacturing, they play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and consistency by ensuring uniform screw tightening. Additionally, torque screwdrivers are valuable for home repairs and DIY projects, helping to prevent screw damage and ensure accurate fastening.
