Metrology Glossary: Pressure Transducer

What Is A Pressure Transducer?

A pressure transducer is a device designed to transform physical pressure into an electrical signal. It functions as a sensor primarily used for measuring the pressure of both liquids and gases. Pressure transducers use various sensing technologies, primarily being strain gauges. These strain gauges are slender metal strips affixed to a flexible diaphragm. When pressure is exerted on the diaphragm, it undergoes deformation, leading to the stretching or compression of the strain gauges. This alteration in their shape results in a corresponding change in the electrical resistance of the strain gauges. This shift in resistance is then converted into an electrical signal that corresponds to the applied pressure.

What Are Pressure Transducers Used For?

  • Monitoring pressure: The fundamental role of pressure transducers is to oversee pressure levels, finding utility across diverse scenarios such as hydraulic systems, pipelines, tanks, and even weather stations for gauging atmospheric pressure.
  • Fluid level assessment: Through the indirect measurement of the pressure exerted by a liquid column, pressure transducers are used to determine the levels of liquids within tanks or reservoirs.
  • Leak identification: The capability of pressure transducers to effectively pinpoint sudden drops in pressure within pipelines or enclosed systems proves invaluable for detecting leaks, thereby averting potential damage or safety risks.
  • Force quantification: Utilizing pressure measurements to gauge the force applied to a surface, pressure transducers play a crucial role in quantifying force, with applications extending to material testing, robotics, and various industrial processes.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
