Metrology Glossary: Bore Gauge

What Is A Bore Gauge?

A bore gauge is a precision measurement device used for accurately determining internal hole diameters. It comes in various types, including dial, digital, and vernier bore gauges. Dial bore gauges feature indicators on calibrated dials to visualize measurements, while digital ones display measurements electronically, often with data storage capabilities. Vernier bore gauges incorporate vernier scales for meticulous readings. The selection of bore gauge type depends on factors like measurement precision and technological preferences.

What Are Bore Gauges Used For?

Automotive Industry:

  • Engine Maintenance: Bore gauges assess cylinder wear, aiding decisions on honing or replacement.
  • Bearing Quality Assurance: Inspecting internal diameters ensures proper fit and identifies wear in bearings.
  • Fuel Injector Integrity: Bore gauges measure fuel injector bore diameters, ensuring optimal fuel delivery.

Manufacturing:

  • Precision Control: Bore gauges validate dimensions of machined components such as gears, bushings, and shafts.
  • Mold and Die Precision: Ensuring consistent product quality by guaranteeing accurate internal cavities in molds and dies.
  • Pipe and Tube Compliance: Bore gauges measure internal diameters, ensuring compliance with specifications and proper fit.

Aerospace Industry:

  • Critical Component Inspection: Bore gauges examine internal diameters of vital aircraft components.
  • Fuel System Integrity: Inspection of fuel lines and valves with bore gauges ensures reliability and identifies wear.
  • Hydraulic System Validation: Bore gauges measure internal diameters, ensuring proper fluid flow in hydraulic systems.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
