Oval Gear Flow Meters

Cross Company Oval Gear Flow Meters

Oval gear meters are a member of the positive displacement flow meter family. They operate by repeatedly filling and emptying compartments of a known volume with a liquid. The flow rate is then calculated based on the number of times these compartments are filled and emptied.

Oval gear meters are generally not recommended for water or water-like fluids, because of the increased risk of fluid slippage between the gears and chamber walls. The exception would be in low flow applications where a turbine meter would not be an appropriate choice due to the low flow velocities.

Our offering from Flomec includes mechanical oval gear flow meters and pulse oval gear flow meters with either BSP, NPT, or 150# ANSI Flange fittings.

Because of the very tight tolerances found within an oval gear meter, even a grain of sand in your fluid could potentially stop the gears from turning. To prevent that, we recommend installing a strainer upstream of your oval gear meter.

Typical Applications for Oval Gear Flow Meters

Oval gear flow meters are constructed for applications involving clean process fluids. Due to their construction, solid media can present problems as it can become entangled in the oval gears. If there are solids, they should be in relatively low concentration for an ideal application of oval gear flow meters. However, the construction does support superior design flexibility through no flow conditioning. These considerations are important when determining the right flow meter for your process application.

In the correct environments (whether municipal, industrial, or commercial), oval gear flow meters can present stable performance, long-term accuracy, and a great deal of application flexibility. Due to their durable, corrosion and shock-resistant coverings, they are able to work in many harsh environments that more delicate instrumentation couldn’t. Further, the accuracy of oval gear flow meters remains high throughout its service life.

Oval gear flow meters also present a great deal of application flexibility. This makes them ideal for use in a wide variety of chemical applications, such as petroleum-based fluids, water solutions, and many other liquids.

It’s important that the nature of the application be considered when determining the correct flow meter for installation. That’s why it’s so important to work with experts like Cross who understand your industry, application, and operation.
