Product Spotlight: Parker Hydraulic Hose For Rising Temperatures

Beat the Heat With Parker Hydraulic Hose

In the Southeast, it gets hot. Did you know that extreme temperatures can significantly impact hydraulic hose performance? As the temperature outside rises, hydraulic fluid viscosity can fluctuate outside of expected ranges. This strains both hoses and connections, posing a threat to machine performance and worker safety.

When hydraulic hoses experience high thermal exposure, aging of elastomers and plastics can occur. Other causes of aging are exposure to direct sunlight and high levels of moisture (or humidity). There are two potential results of this exposure: first, hose composition can be affected, decreasing elongations and increasing tensile strength (making the hose rigid and brittle). Second, components weakened by heat strain can fail, occasionally in sequence (a chain rupture), compromising hydraulic lines or entire hydraulic systems.

Temparature Considerations for Hose Selection

A major consideration Parker recommends is the temperature at which the hose will be subject to. (This is the “T” in S.T.A.M.P.) To maximize hose service life, temperature considerations must be made for the external environment and the conveyed media. Your hose should have a working temperature greater than or equal to both the fluid and ambient temperature the hose will be exposed to.

Parker provides a comprehensive temperature chart to help determine the right hose based on those factors. Another means of ensuring your hydraulic systems can beat the heat is working with a professional. At Cross NC hose stores, our experts will work directly with you to understand the nature of your application. This allows us to select the right hose for the job, minimizing risks of heat-related hose failure.

Whether you’ve had a hose rupture or are concerned about machine performance in the summer heat, we’ve got you covered. Come by our stores or contact our Customer Care Team to learn more about how Cross can protect your hydraulic machines, even in the heat.
