Best Practice in Valve Automation

Valve automation improves safety and efficiency by allowing the remote operation of valves in the field. But wanting to automate your valve and actually doing it are two different things!

Cross Process Solutions’ Ronnie Moore has decades of experience with valves and tying them into control systems. In this four part video series, Ronnie gives you a step-by-step guide to the things to consider when automating your valves from the types of valves to controllers and remote access.

WIKA Resource: Introduction to Differential Pressure Measurement

By measuring differential pressure, users are able to easily and accurately monitor filter conditions, liquid levels in closed tanks, liquid flow rates inside a pipe, and even the output torque of hydraulic motors.

But do you understand the types of ways to measure pressure and when differential pressure is the most effective method? This comprehensive introduction to differential pressure measurement from Cross partner WIKA discusses the three main methods of measuring pressure, then takes a deep dive into the reasons why a DP gauge can be more effective in certain applications.

FCI Webinar: Using thermal mass flow meters in wet gas applications

Thermal mass flow meters have become very common in municipal applications including aeration, anaerobic digestion, CHP, flares, odor control and grit removal. They provide reliable flow measurement without the need for additional temperature or pressure compensation nor a flow computer.

However, wet gas measurement applications continue to be difficult, where there’s moisture or condensate in the gas stream. In this webinar from the virtual 2024 Water Expo, Cross partner FCI explains some of the theory behind thermal mass flow measurement and some practical measures anyone can take to get good, reliable measurements in wet gas applications.

Improve Efficiency

The new 10% overpressure vents from Cross partner GROTH are able to achieve the same flow capacity with a far lower psi, leading to better performance at lower cost than pilot-operated vents.

The sealing of the new valves was also developed to minimize fugitive emissions while providing increased protection and safety to tank equipment and on-site personnel. They can also be paired with a flame arrestor for applications with explosive concerns.

Improve Efficiency

Sometimes the little things can make your work just a bit easier. Like the new CSR 425 retractable holder for ball valves from Cross partner M4Knick. Designed specifically to work with 1″ process connections, it allows for the easy insertion and retraction of pH sensors under process conditions.

The CSR 425 is ideal for quick-disconnect sensors. You will never have to pull the cable completely through the fitting when changing out the sensor. It also allows you to easily replace old sensor technology as well as an option for applications requiring insertion depths of up to 11.5″.

Reduce Risk

Looking to directly connect your devices and sensors in Ex Zones 0, 1 and 2? Not only can Ethernet APL from Cross partner Phoenix Contact be used in potentially explosive atmospheres but it’s also capable of bridging distances of up to 1km.

This means you can capture and analyze huge amounts of data from all around your plant, even in remote or hazardous areas. The data exchange is done via only two wires, reducing complexity with the option of also being able to supply power to connected devices on the same pair of wires.

Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
