CMM Upgrades to Improve Throughput

The structure of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is built to measure for 20 years or more. But unfortunately, the control systems, electronics and software aren’t so long lasting. Not only will they need more and more maintenance and support but they can quickly become outdated as new technology is developed.

CMMs are also expensive pieces of capital equipment to replace which can be hard to justify. There are also logistical considerations around moving a heavy, large piece of equipment out of a lab and a new piece in.

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is an integral piece of inspection equipment. Using a touch-trigger (or other probe) it takes a series of highly accurate measurements along the X, Y, and Z axes along the surface of an object. This method is much more reliable than utilizing traditional hand tools due to its repeatability and precision.

Options for upgrades:

Before getting rid of that CMM, take a look at some of the upgrade options we offer that may extend the life of your current system. Our team can help you determine the best upgrade options for your application.

There are many benefits to installing new technology on your older hardware, including:

  • Latest software packages have easy-to-use, intuitive user interfaces to reduce programming time
  • They integrate with the latest versions of CAD formats
  • Have the capability to take in data from multiple sensors which enables the right tool for the job
  • Can create CMM programs offline to improve productivity
  • Ability to use the same software package across measurement devices, including portable CMMs

Software packages that Cross recommends:

  • Metrologic – Powerful Advanced GD&T applications
  • CMM Manager – One of the most user friendly CMM programming softwares on the market

CMM equipment from CrossModern probing technology can greatly enhance your measurement capability, from automated stylus changing to faster measurement speed with more accuracy. Here are some of the latest probe options.

Rennishaw Probing Systems from 5 axis solutions like the ph-20 or REVO or PH10 solutions to including scanning probes.

Whether you are replacing obsolete equipment or ensuring compatibility with new software and probes, a new CMM controller can:

  • Blend machine moves to increase performance
  • Fully utilize the latest probe technology for optimum efficiency
  • Automate CMM functions including loading with robots (hint: Cross can help with the robots and integration too!  Find out more about automated quality inspection and machine tending.
  • Support 4th axis rotary tables

Upgraded CMMs Offer a Range of Benefits

Upgrading CMM control systems, electronics and software is an alternative to purchasing new equipment.  Generally, the upgrade will be less expensive than purchasing a new CMM and will also:

Increase Productivity

By using the latest sensor technology and rapid programming software, you can up your throughput to save time and money.  Our partners, Metrologic, did a time study using an older 3 axis system vs. an up-to-date 5 axis one. Learn More

Reduce Cost

Not only is upgrading a CMM less expensive than buying a new one, but an upgraded model will be more reliable and need less service.

Get Better Insight

Using the latest scanners and touch probes will give you a much higher level of measurement information, helping you to better control your processes.

Compatibility Across Multiple Measuring Devices

Standardizing on one software package for your fixed and portable CMMs reduces training and support needs.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
