Specifications (S.T.A.M.P.)

The S.T.A.M.P acronym is an industry-wide standard that should begin every conversation when replacing an existing hose, or selecting a hose for a new application. The easy to remember acronym stands for Size, Temperature, Application, Material/Media, Pressure. Learn more about S.T.A.M.P. in our Technical Guide: The Hose Selection Process.

Size:

The hose ID needs to be accurately sized to achieve proper flow velocity. Too slow of a flow leads to sluggish system performance while too high of a flow causes excessive pressure drops, system damage, and leaks.

Temperature:

When specifying hose, two temperatures need to be identified: ambient temperature (the external temperature of the hose) and internal temperature (the media temperature).

Application:

Before selecting a hose, it’s important to consider: what type of environment will it be in? What are the environmental factors? Will the routing be confined? Are fittings permanent or field-attachable? Will the assembly be subjected to abrasion?

Media:

The hose you’re using needs to be compatible with the media being conveyed. Compatibility must cover the inner tube, the cover, hose fittings, and o-rings. Many applications require using specialized oils or chemicals.

Pressure:

Hose selection must be made so that the listed maximum working pressure of the hose is equal to or greater than the maximum system pressure. Surge pressures must also be considered and must also be below the published maximum of the working hose.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
