Automation Glossary: Machine Tending

What Is Machine Tending?

Machine tending is a manufacturing process where an operator oversees and manages the operation of industrial machines. The responsibilities often include loading and unloading materials, adjusting machine settings, resolving any issues or malfunctions, and ensuring smooth, efficient machine performance. This role demands a mix of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and manual precision.

This process can be enhanced by automation. Machine tending automation allows for operators to focus on more complex tasks rather than repetitive tasks associated with machine tending. Automated machine tending also has the ability to collect data for further process optimization to increase productivity and efficiency.

What Is Machine Tending Used For?

  • Material Handling: Automated machine tending systems are able to efficiently load raw materials and unload finished products, minimizing manual intervention and boosting productivity.
  • Machine Configuration: Automated machine tending systems can adjust machine settings such as speed, temperature, and pressure based on preset guidelines or real-time data, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Quality Assurance: These systems continuously monitor product quality detecting defects and reducing the need for manual inspections.
  • Process Enhancement: By gathering and analyzing machine performance data, automated machine tending systems uncover areas for improvement and optimize production processes.
