Metrology Glossary: Caliper

What Is a Caliper?

A caliper is a precision measuring tool used to gauge the thickness, width, diameter, or depth of an item. It consists of two adjustable legs or jaws that can be closed to secure the object under measurement. These jaws are usually crafted from hardened steel, ensuring accuracy. Calipers find applications across various sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, and construction.

Where Are Calipers Used?

Calipers find extensive application in multiple industries including:

  • Manufacturing: Calipers are used to gauge the dimensions of a diverse range of components, from minute parts to extensive assemblies. For example, calipers are used to assess the diameter of a shaft, the thickness of a metal sheet, or the depth of a bored hole
  • Engineering: Engineers utilize calipers in the design and testing phases of product development. Calipers are used in measuring the dimensions of prototypes, ensuring that products adhere to specified criteria, and diagnosing any issues. For example, an engineer might use a caliper to measure the thickness of an airplane wing, verifying its strength to withstand the stresses of flight.
  • Construction: Calipers are used to measure the dimensions of various building materials, such as lumber, drywall, and concrete. Their role is to guarantee that materials conform to the correct size and shape before installation. For example, a carpenter might use a caliper to measure the thickness of a piece of lumber, ensuring it aligns with the project’s required specifications.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
