Metrology Glossary: Magnetic Separator

What Is A Magnetic Separator?

A magnetic separator is a device used in various industries that uses magnetism for the extraction of magnetic particles from a blend. Generally comprising magnets placed in proximity to or within a conveyor belt, liquid conduit, or descending chute, its function is to attract and separate ferrous metals from the substance in motion. This process ensures a more refined final product and safeguards equipment against potential harm.

What Are Magnetic Separators Used For?

  • Recycling industry: Magnetic separators enhance recycling by separating ferrous from non-ferrous metals, improving material quality and value.
  • Mining industry: Magnetic separators extract iron ore from crushed rock, aiding ore concentration before smelting.
  • Food industry: Essential for food safety, magnetic separators remove metal contaminants, safeguarding products and processing equipment.
  • Pharmaceutical industry: Magnetic separators ensure drug purity by removing metal particles, upholding safety standards.
  • Chemical industry: Magnetic separators prevent unwanted reactions by purging iron impurities from chemicals.
  • Pulp and paper industry: Vital for machinery protection, magnetic separators remove metal impurities from wood pulp.
  • Water treatment industry: Magnetic separators improve water quality by extracting iron contaminants, eliminating staining and unpleasant tastes.

Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
