Metrology Glossary: Moisture Analyzer

What Is A Moisture Analyzer?

A device used to determine the moisture level within a specimen through a process of drying and subsequent weighing before and after the drying cycle. It comprises a weighing component and an infrared heating component. The infrared heating module dries the sample by emitting infrared radiation, which is absorbed by the water molecules contained in the sample, causing them to evaporate and the sample to lose weight. The weighing unit assesses the sample’s weight both prior to and after the drying phase, and the moisture content is computed as the discrepancy in weight divided by the original sample weight.

What Are Moisture Analyzers Used For?

Quality Control:

  • Food and Beverage Industry: Guaranteeing the ideal moisture levels in food items such as cereals, snacks, coffee, tea, and spices to optimize flavor, consistency, and product shelf life.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Validating the moisture content in medications to ensure precise dosage and long-term stability.
  • Chemical Industry: Supervising moisture levels in both raw materials and finished products to maintain uniformity and avert undesired reactions.
  • Textile Industry: Regulating moisture content in fabrics to achieve the desired quality, strength, and dye absorption.

Process Optimization:

  • Agriculture: Assessing moisture content in soil, grains, and crops to enhance irrigation, harvesting, and storage practices.
  • Construction Industry: Identifying moisture levels in building materials such as wood, concrete, and drywall to prevent mold growth and structural deterioration.
  • Pulp and Paper Industry: Overseeing moisture content in pulp and paper products to ensure optimal printing and processing efficiency.

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Environmental Studies: Examining moisture content in soil and air samples to evaluate environmental conditions and pollution levels.
  • Waste Management: Determining moisture content in waste materials to facilitate efficient recycling and disposal processes.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
