Metrology Glossary: Panel Meter

What Is A Panel Meter?

A panel meter is a device engineered for the precise measurement and visual representation of various physical parameters, including voltage, current, temperature, or pressure. These instruments find their use in industrial and engineering applications, where accurate monitoring and control are paramount. Typically, panel meters are strategically mounted on panels, situated within environments such as control rooms or machine enclosures, ensuring easy accessibility for operators and technicians. This placement allows for the quick and efficient assessment of critical data. Panel meters are available in two primary formats: analog, which uses traditional dials and pointers, and digital, which utilizes numeric displays or screens to provide real-time information.

What Are Panel Meters Used For?

  • Power Generation and Distribution: Panel meters play a pivotal role in power generation plants, transmission networks, and industrial facilities. Their application extends to monitoring and regulating voltage, current, power, and various electrical parameters.
  • Process Control: Panel meters are integral for overseeing and managing a spectrum of physical parameters including temperature, pressure, flow, and level control, with applications spanning industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Instrumentation and Measurement: Serving as standalone instruments, panel meters are employed for precise measurement and display of physical parameters. Their utility extends to laboratories, test equipment, and production lines, contributing to accurate data acquisition.
  • HVAC and Building Automation: Panel meters find application in HVAC systems and building automation, where they are utilized for monitoring and controlling environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and pressure. This enhances efficiency and ensures optimal conditions within buildings.
  • Automotive and Transportation: Panel meters are essential components in monitoring and managing parameters related to engine performance, fuel consumption, and other critical aspects in vehicles and machinery within the automotive and transportation sectors.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
