Metrology Glossary: Thermocouple Calibrator

What Is A Thermocouple Calibrator?

A thermocouple calibrator is an essential tool used in temperature measurement. It serves to validate the accuracy of thermocouples, which function as temperature sensors by converting temperature differences into electrical voltage. The magnitude of this voltage depends on the metal type within the thermocouple and the temperature differential it encounters. To ensure the reliability of temperature readings, thermocouple calibrators replicate a known temperature at the thermocouple’s junction, often utilizing reference temperature sensors or heating elements. The calibrator then measures the voltage produced by the thermocouple and compares it to the expected voltage for the corresponding temperature. In cases of discrepancies, the calibrator fine-tunes the thermocouple, thereby ensuring precise and dependable temperature measurements.

What Are Thermocouple Calibrators Used For?

  • Enhanced Precision: Consistent calibration guarantees precise temperature readings, promoting accuracy and reliability in thermocouple performance.
  • Optimized Process Management: Reliable temperature measurements lead to better control over industrial processes, enhancing overall efficiency and product quality.
  • Cost Savings: Averting equipment malfunctions and downtime caused by inaccurate temperature readings can result in substantial cost reductions.
  • Heightened Safety: Given the pivotal role of thermocouples in safety systems across diverse industries, regular calibration safeguards their optimal functionality, mitigating the risk of accidents.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
