Metrology Glossary: Thread Gauge

What Is A Thread Gauge?

A thread gauge, also known as a screw or pitch gauge, precisely measures the pitch or lead of screw threads. The pitch is the distance between consecutive threads, while the lead represents the distance a screw advances in one full rotation. These gauges ensure screws and threaded holes meet exact specifications. The two main types are plug and ring gauges. Plug gauges assess internal threads by insertion, while ring gauges measure external threads by fitting over them. Both types come in GO and NO GO versions. GO gauges verify that threads are at least the minimum size specified, and NO GO gauges confirm threads do not exceed the maximum specified size.

What Are Thread Gauges Used For?

Manufacturing:

  • Quality Control: Thread gauges ensure precise tolerances for threaded parts, inspecting materials and validating production processes.
  • Tooling and Setup Verification: Used to identify tooling issues and setup errors in manufacturing processes.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Thread gauges assess worn threads, guiding replacement parts and repair procedures.

Construction:

  • Fastener Selection: Thread gauges guarantee compatibility between fasteners and threaded holes for secure fastening.
  • Pipe and Fitting Installation: Verify correct threading for leak-proof connections in plumbing and piping systems.

Automotive:

  • Engine and Component Assembly: Thread gauges ensure tight tolerances for precise assembly in automotive systems.

Aerospace:

  • High-Precision Applications: Thread gauges maintain strict standards, crucial for safety and performance in aerospace components.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
