Metrology Glossary: Torque Watch

What Is A Torque Watch?

A torque watch, also known as a torque watch gauge, is a compact, handheld instrument engineered for the measurement of torque exerted on fasteners, such as screws, bolts, and nuts. These devices typically feature calibrated scales or digital displays, providing precise measurements. Their primary purpose is to ensure that the correct amount of torque is applied during assembly, helping to avert two common problems: under-tightening, which can result in mechanical failures or loose connections, and over-tightening, which may damage fasteners, materials, or the components being fastened.

What Are Torque Watches Used For?

Torque watches serve a diverse range of applications across many industries. In automotive and aviation assembly, they are used for ensuring the correct tightness of crucial components in engines and transmissions. In the electronics sector, they prevent damage to delicate components due to excessive torque or unreliable connections from insufficient torque. In medical device assembly, they ensure precision and safety by fastening components with the correct torque. Additionally, they are widely used in construction and manufacturing to secure fasteners in various structures and machinery, ensuring structural integrity and safety. Torque watches are also becoming increasingly popular for home repairs and DIY projects, facilitating precise and secure fastening in household appliances and furniture.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
