Metrology Glossary: Torque Wrench

What Is A Torque Wrench?

A torque wrench is an essential mechanical tool designed to enable users to apply a predetermined and exact amount of torque when tightening nuts and bolts. This precision is important due to the negative effects of imprecise torque application. Over-tightening fasteners can inflict harm, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the assembly or damaging threads, making future adjustments difficult. Conversely, under-tightening may lead to fasteners gradually loosening over time, resulting in decreased stability and reliability of the connected components, which could lead to safety hazards or equipment malfunction.

What Are Torque Wrenches Used For?

Torque wrenches find many applications in various industries. In the automotive sector, they are crucial for precisely tightening fasteners on engines, transmissions, suspension components, and other automotive parts, preventing issues like over-tightening or under-tightening, which can lead to engine failure, suspension issues, or leaks. In industrial settings, torque wrenches are vital for assembling and maintaining machinery, equipment, and structures, ensuring safety, reliability, and performance. Construction projects benefit from torque wrenches when securing structural components, guaranteeing stability and integrity. The aviation and aerospace sectors depend on these tools to maintain the integrity of aircraft components. In electronics manufacturing, torque wrenches are essential for handling delicate electronic components, preventing damage or malfunctions.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
