Metrology Glossary: Video Measuring Machine (VMM)

What Is A Video Measuring Machine (VMM)?

A video measuring machine (VMM), also known as a vision measuring system, is an advanced instrument used for accurate dimensional analysis. Equipped with a camera and specialized software, it captures magnified images of components. The software processes these images to measure edges, distances, and angles in both 2D and 3D. VMMs operate without making physical contact with the parts, making them useful for inspecting delicate items. Known for their speed and precision, these machines are widely utilized in quality control across various industries.

What Are Video Measuring Machines Used For?

  • Quality Control in Manufacturing: Video Measuring Machines (VMMs) are essential for ensuring that parts meet precise specifications during production. Their non-contact measurement capability makes them ideal for delicate components such as electronics and medical devices. VMMs are able to measure features such as diameters, lengths, angles, and complex geometries.
  • Inspection of Small Parts: With high-resolution cameras and magnification capabilities, VMMs are excellent at measuring intricate details on small parts. This is particularly important in industries such as electronics and micromachining.
  • Automotive and Aerospace Applications: VMMs are crucial in maintaining tight tolerances in the automotive and aerospace sectors. They can efficiently measure engine components, gears, and even entire airfoils for airplanes.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): VMMs generate extensive measurement data, which can be utilized for SPC. This helps manufacturers identify trends and potential quality issues early in the production process.
  • Automated Inspection Systems: VMMs can be integrated into automated production lines for continuous part inspection, enhancing efficiency and reducing the risk of human error.
  • Medical Device Manufacturing: VMMs ensure the precise dimensions of medical implants, surgical tools, and other delicate medical components, which directly impact patient safety.

Did you know… Cross Company is an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Our ESOP started in 1979 and as of 2006, we are 100% employee-owned! Learn more about our ESOP and how that benefits both team members and our customers.
Did you know... the precision measurement group at Cross was founded in 1939 by our current CEO's grandfather, Jim King. That's a whole lot of calibration!
Did you know... A fingerprint weighs about 50 micrograms. We know, we weighed it! The residue left from a finger can actually make a difference in weight results which is why we wear gloves when we calibrate weights. For reference, a sheet of paper is about 4.5 grams, that’s 4.5 million micrograms.
Did you know… Cross Company has grown significantly since our start in 1954. Over the years we've acquired 26 companies! Today, our five groups have expertise in everything from industrial automation to precision measurement, and industry knowledge going all the way back to 1939.
